NDC's Ewurabena Aubynn makes history in Ablekuma North; Ending NPP's 28-year stronghold

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured a landmark victory in the Ablekuma North Constituency, with parliamentary candidate Ewurabena Aubynn defeating the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Nana Akua Afriyie by 209 votes in a tense re-run election.

The result, declared late Friday night, marks the first time the NDC has won the seat since Ghana's Fourth Republic began in 1992.

Results from the Electoral Commission (EC) showed Aubynn polled 34,090 votes against Afriyie's 33,881 across all 281 polling stations, including 19 where voting was repeated on July 11. The total votes cast stood at 68,382, with 411 ballots rejected.

The re-run was ordered after December's general election ended in deadlock due to disputes over unauthenticated result sheets.

Initially, the NPP claimed victory with a 414-vote margin, but legal challenges forced the EC to withhold certification. A January 2025 High Court ruling mandated completion of collation, but unresolved irregularities ultimately led to Friday's re-run.

The NPP's campaign was marred by internal strife after party leaders boycotted the re-run, calling it "electoral injustice." However, Afriyie defied the directive, continuing her bid with grassroots support. The divisions, coupled with election-day violence—including an attack on Afriyie and former Minister Hawa Koomson—likely eroded the NPP's traditional advantage.

Violence mars polling

Chaos erupted at several stations, with unidentified assailants disrupting voting. A police officer was interdicted after assaulting a journalist covering the process. Despite this, voting proceeded, and Aubynn's consistent messaging on accountability resonated with voters, particularly the youth.

Ablekuma North had been an NPP stronghold since its creation, making Aubynn's win a seismic shift in Greater Accra's political landscape. Analysts attribute the upset to NPP infighting and inconsistency, the EC's insistence on due process, and the NDC's targeted campaign.
