Action dominates Gt. Accra CHOPSS sports festival

The 2016 Greater Accra Private Schools Sports Festival for second cycle institutions took off at the El Wak Stadium last Wednesday with defending champions, Action Progressive Secondary Technical School, continuing its dominance over some of the field events and other disciplines.

The defending champions won gold and silver at both the 3,000m and 800-metre events last Wednesday, and defeated Dansis with two straight sets victory in the boys Volleyball competition with the girls also winning 2-1 over KATS in the opening round of the volleyball competition.

It was Deborah Gah who set the tone for the defending champions in the 3000 metre event when she clocked 11:28:35 minutes to clinch gold, with Emanuela Edu, also of Action, clocking 11:37:47 minutes to take the silver. Grace Kanu of Pank took the bronze with a time of 12:08:37.

In the 800 metre event, Judith Donkor of Action proved too strong for her competitors when she clocked 2:27:46 minutes to take the gold, with Deborah Gah clocking 2:28:78 minutes to take the silver. Alberta Bonsu of CABS took the bronze in that event with a time of 2:56:62.

In the 5,000 metre event however, David Adanu of NAVS exhibited exemplary stamina to take total control, clinching gold with a time of 16:14:43 minutes. Ishmael Denzelpcon and Ramzy Ocansey , both from Action, took the silver and bronze by clocking 16:39:38 and 16: 40:08 minutes respectively.

Solomon A. Nortey from His Majesty also proved equal to the task by outrunning Action in the 800 metre event to take gold with a time of 2:02:53. Paul Mohammed of Action, who was the favourite, took the silver with a time of 2:03 minutes with Emmanuel Americuazi, also of Action, clocking 2:07:66 to take the bronze.

In the opening round of the football competition,PANK held Action to a goalless draw with YMCA taking DEKS to the cleaners’  table with a 3-0 victory. DEKS was on hand again during their encounter with Dansis as they defeated them 1-0 to prove that they are the team to watch in the football competition.

In an address, the Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Private Secondary Schools (CHOPSS), Norbert Andy Sulemane, urged the participating schools to exhibit good behaviour, warning that any school found to flout the regulations governing the sports festival would be sanctioned.
