Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and his wife, fashion entrepreneur Cristina Serra, have initiated divorce proceedings but have made a surprising decision—both are using the same lawyer to handle their separation.
The couple, who recently agreed on the initial terms of their settlement, are determined to keep the process amicable for the sake of their three children and to avoid a lengthy court battle.
Spanish journalist Lorena Vázquez, speaking on the national TV programme Y Ahora Sonsolesas quoted by The Mirror, confirmed that six weeks after news of their split surfaced, the pair had officially begun legal proceedings. She emphasised that their decision to share legal representation was a deliberate move to ensure a smooth and conflict-free separation.
"The divorce is being prepared conscientiously and they have left it in the hands of people they really trust," Vázquez explained. "What surprises me the most is that both of them have the same lawyer who is arranging the whole thing. They want it to be amicable for the sake of their children."

Why the split?
Reports suggest that the unexpected renewal of Guardiola’s contract with Manchester City played a significant role in the separation. Cristina, who relocated to Barcelona with their youngest child in 2019 to focus on her business, reportedly felt that his decision to remain in England until 2027 was the final straw.
According to Vázquez, Cristina decided "enough was enough" after Guardiola extended his contract, a move that was both surprising and burdensome for her. She added that while the couple initially tried to keep the details private, they have now begun confirming their separation to close friends.
Despite the split, Cristina appears to be focusing on her life in Spain. When asked by reporters about the break-up, she opted for silence, only stating that she was “feeling great” while shopping in Barcelona.
Their children’s perspective
Their eldest daughter, Maria Guardiola, has also spoken about the values her parents instilled in her regarding life and love. In a recent interview with a Spanish magazine, she reflected on their teachings, saying:
"My parents have always advised me to find what I am passionate about. They encourage me to try new things, to accept failure, and to keep searching until I find my calling, because when I do, full dedication will come naturally. They also remind me that the most important thing in life is to love and be loved."
With no reported third parties involved, Guardiola and Cristina’s divorce appears to be a mutual and respectful decision, largely shaped by the pressures of football and family life. By using the same lawyer, they are prioritising a peaceful resolution—one that safeguards their children’s well-being and ensures a dignified separation.
