Thomas Partey’s Arsenal future in doubt as contract nears expiry
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has cast doubt on the future of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey at the club, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current season.
Partey, alongside Italian international Jorginho, is now eligible to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs as the January transfer window opens.
Speaking at a press conference, Arteta expressed his admiration for both midfielders but acknowledged the possibility of their departure.
“Well when that situation is in the contract, that is a possibility,” Arteta said. “It’s close communication with them to understand as well what the idea is, what they want to do, as well as our intentions, and then decide what is the best option for everybody. But they are two players I am very, very happy with. They are such a value in the squad.”
Partey, who joined Arsenal in 2020 from Atlético Madrid for £45 million, has been a key figure in the Gunners’ midfield. However, injuries have limited his appearances this season, raising questions about his long-term role at the club.
Arteta remained focused on ensuring both players are in the right frame of mind as the team enters a crucial part of the season. “When I want to give them with the right mind frame, because it’s the most important part of the season,” he said.
Potential January signings
While addressing Partey and Jorginho’s uncertain futures, Arteta did not rule out the possibility of adding reinforcements during the January transfer window.
“I don’t know because the focus is on the players we have,” he said when asked about potential signings.
“If something stronger is in the market that we can afford and we believe is going to have a real impact on the team, we always have to be open for that possibility because we’d have the ability to improve the squad in the windows. But at the moment, the focus is on what we have.”
What lies ahead for Partey?
As one of Ghana’s most prominent football exports, Partey’s potential departure could spark interest from several top European clubs outside England. Arsenal fans will be hoping for clarity in the coming weeks as Arteta and the club navigate contract negotiations and the challenges of the January transfer window.
For now, Partey’s focus will remain on helping Arsenal maintain their position in the Premier League and pushing for silverware in the second half of the season.
