University of Ghana strike early to clinch Honda Football Championship title
The University of Ghana has been crowned champions of the 2026 Honda Football Championship after edging out the University for Development Studies 1-0 in a tightly contested final at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.
UG’s triumph capped an impressive campaign defined by resilience and composure, as the team navigated a competitive field to secure the title. Despite an early setback in the group stage, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to the University of Mines and Technology, the Legon-based side regrouped to advance to the knockout phase.
Their semi-final clash against the University of Energy and Natural Resources proved to be a stern test, ending goalless after regulation time. UG, however, held their nerve during the penalty shootout, converting four times to seal a 4-1 victory and book a place in the final.
In the decisive encounter, UG wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Mamudu Farouk struck in the opening minute to hand his side an early advantage, setting the tone for a disciplined and tactically controlled performance.
UDS pushed for an equaliser and enjoyed spells of pressure, but UG remained compact at the back and organised in midfield, frustrating their opponents and protecting their slender lead until the final whistle.
The victory marks a significant achievement for UG, who demonstrated consistency and mental strength throughout the tournament to emerge as deserving champions.
Earlier, fans were treated to an emphatic performance in the curtain-raiser, as Tamale Senior High School thrashed Ghana Senior High School 4-0.
Tamasco set the pace from the outset, scoring within the opening minute before extending their lead with a dominant first-half display. Captain Dawuda Fawzan led by example with a brace, while Musir added a third before the break to leave Ghanasco struggling.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Tamasco maintaining their intensity and control. Tidow Osman rounded off the scoring with a fourth goal, sealing a comprehensive victory and providing an entertaining prelude to the final.
The 2026 Honda Football Championship, powered by Honda and Overseas Union Ltd and produced by RITE Sports Services, once again highlighted the depth of football talent within Ghana’s educational institutions.
