Danny Welbeck scored his first goal for almost a year as Watford beat Swansea to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Watford, thrashed 8-0 by Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday, opened the scoring at Vicarage Road through Welbeck's header from Roberto Pereyra's cross.

Sam Surridge equalised for Championship side Swansea when he converted Nathan Dyer's centre from close range.

Swansea's Yan Dhanda shot wide before substitute Gerard Deulofeu's cross gave Pereyra an easy tap-in.

England striker Welbeck, who joined Watford from Arsenal on a free transfer in August, had not scored for 334 days.

His last goal came for Arsenal against Sporting CP in the Europa League in October 2018. He suffered a broken ankle in November that kept him out for six months.

Watford head coach Quique Sanchez Flores: "The important thing was to win after the weekend. It was a bad experience for all of us.

"I told the players we don't have reasons to be sad. We have reasons to react. We need to show everyone we can do much better.

"We felt the support from the fans so I say 'thank you' to them.

"It's in the past and now we have another important game against Wolves in a few days."

Swansea manager Steve Cooper: "The performance was much better than the result. We were the best team for large parts.

"Obviously we were disappointed to concede from a set-play, but we scored a good goal from the move of the match.

"We showed great bravery on the ball and wanted to win the game. We were unlucky to lose."
