Villarreal defends Partey signing amid rape charges: “We respect the presumption of innocence”

Spanish La Liga side Villarreal has issued a statement addressing concerns surrounding their latest signing, Ghana international Thomas Partey, who is currently facing serious legal charges in the United Kingdom.

Partey, 32, joined Villarreal as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Arsenal at the end of June. His transfer has since sparked widespread public reaction, particularly after it emerged that the former Atletico Madrid midfielder is facing five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving three women in the UK. He denies all charges.

In its official statement, Villarreal confirmed awareness of the ongoing legal proceedings and emphasised its adherence to the legal principle of presumption of innocence. “The club is aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceedings in England,” the statement said. “The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him.”

Villarreal noted that, in line with English law governing ongoing legal matters, it would refrain from further comment. “Due to the law in England in relation to the ongoing proceedings the club is unable to comment further,” the statement added.

The charges against Partey stem from a police investigation that began in February 2022. Earlier this week, he appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where he was granted conditional bail. As part of the conditions, he is prohibited from contacting the alleged victims and must inform authorities of any permanent changes in residence or international travel.

Villarreal’s signing of the player has drawn public criticism, with nearly 1,000 fans signing an online petition launched by the Villarreal Report to protest the club’s decision. In response, the club reiterated its institutional values. “Villarreal CF wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any act of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, or any behaviour that undermines the dignity of individuals,” the statement read.

Partey is expected to join his new teammates on Friday as preparations for the upcoming La Liga season continue. He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on September 2.

His move comes just a day after Villarreal secured a 3-2 victory against Arsenal in a pre-season friendly at the Emirates Stadium.
