We need financial support — George Darko
Ghana’s gold medalist at this year’s All African Games (AAG) in Brazzaville, Congo, George Darko, has expressed anxiety over the sports ministry’s lack of support for him and his partner after a successful tournament in Congo.
George Darko partnered Wisdom Narh-Adjrago to beat DR Congo in the men’s tennis doubles final to emerge Africa champions.
Darko, who has subsequently been regarded as Ghana’s number 1, came up with some brilliant displays and led the charge with perfect serves, while Narh aided with some brilliant techniques to defeat their Congolese counterparts.
“We haven’t had much financial support since we arrived from Congo”, Darko said in a conversation with the Graphic sports.
“My partner and I were given $2500 each on our arrival which doesn’t seem fit for gold medallist”, he added.
According to Darko, his finances had solely been catered for by his manager, Isaac Tomagah currently out of the country, for the past four years.
He lamented that most of their trips cost them $3000 and made such trips every three months to different countries in Africa and other continents as well.
George Darko, who was supposed to defend his ATP point in Gabon had to forgi it for the national duty when he represented Ghana in Congo during the All Africa Games.
Both Darko and Wisdom are billed to participate in the Davis Cup in Cairo and, therefore, are appealling to ministry to help them prepare well for the tournament.
The duo is asking the sports ministry to assist them financially as they promise to bring another trophy home. By Daniel Amankrah
