Friday frenzy on Ghana Stock Exchange as investors chase blue-chip gains

The Ghana Stock Exchange closed the trading week on a spectacular high note, with both benchmark indices recording sharp gains on the back of heavy buying interest, particularly in telecommunications giant Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana).

The GSE Composite Index surged by 338.93 points to settle at 12,869.20, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index also jumped by 366.14 points to close at 7,692.88.

Trading activity was robust, with a total of 24,113,422 shares changing hands, valued at over GH₵135.7 million. This represents an increase in value compared to the previous session's GHS24 million, underscoring renewed investor confidence.

The standout performer of the day was unquestionably MTN Ghana, which saw 22,876,764 shares traded, accounting for the vast majority of the day's volume and value.

The stock's closing price held steady at GHS5.56, contributing GHS127.1 million to the day's total value traded. Following the end of trading the company announced record-breaking 2025 profits and a proposed final dividend of GH₵0.40 per sharen.

Enterprise Group PLC also posted impressive gains, climbing by GH₵0.68 to close at GH₵7.48, while Societe Generale Ghana rose by GH₵0.94 to end the session at GH₵10.40. Standard Chartered Bank advanced by GH₵3.55 to GH₵39.05, and Ecobank Ghana edged up by GH₵0.90 to GH₵53.00.

On the losing side, Cal Bank recorded a modest decline of GH₵0.02, closing at GH₵0.88.

The day's market capitalisation climbed to GHS235.7 billion, reflecting the positive sentiment sweeping through the bourse. With dividend announcements now in full swing and macroeconomic indicators pointing to stability, investors appear to be positioning themselves for a rewarding first quarter.
