Huawei to train 10,000 people in ICT by 2024
Global ICT company, Huawei Technologies Ltd, has spent in excess of GH¢1.18 billion on procurement and local contracting in the past five years.
The company, which became the official Information and Communications Technology (ICT) strategic partner of the government in 2017, also paid GH¢92 million in various taxes last year.
“In the past five years, an average of 3,500 local jobs have been created each year,” the Director of Public and Government Affairs at Huawei Technologies, Ms Jenny Zhou, said at the maiden edition of the 'Huawei Day with Media' a media engagement in Accra on May 28, this year.
She stated that Huawei was committed to support Ghana’s digital hub agenda.
Talent development
Under its talent development, the director of public and government affairs said with regards to the partnership, Huawei had committed resources to help accelerate the country’s digitalisation agenda.
She explained that Huawei strongly believed that Ghana had the potential to become the ICT hub in West Africa and that vision continued to drive its activities in the country.
“From October, 2018 to date, we completed the training of more than 5,000 citizens, including government officials, university teachers and students, and partners and more than 2,000 people have obtained Huawei certification,” she said.
As a result, Ms Zhou added the ICT company had designed curriculum resources that met the needs of industry for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), colleges and universities in the country.
“Currently, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana (UG) have introduced Huawei certification courses into compulsory teaching.
“In 2020, with the support of the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Education, 50 college students joined the first online seed event in Ghana, and 200 incumbents and students from the National Communications Authority (NCA), the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), the UG and the KNUST were the beneficiaries of the first 5G training in 2020,” she said.

This year, Huawei will train more than 10,000 Ghanaians in ICT within the next three years for which a cooperation agreement will be signed with the Ministries of Communications and Education.
This forms part of the company’s commitment to grow the capacity of the people in ICT through the Huawei ICT Training (HIT) Programme and support Ghana's vision of becoming the digital hub of Africa.
“Driven by the President’s commitment and long-term social responsibility, we released the Huawei ICT Talent (HIT) training plan in 2021.
“Huawei will sign MoU cooperation agreements with the Ministries of Communications and Education to ensure cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, Ai and Cloud computing are popularised in Ghana.
“We plan to train 10,000 people by 2024 to support Ghana's vision of becoming the digital hub of Africa,” Ms Zhou said.
Contribution to economy
The Deputy Managing Director of Huawel Ghana, Mr Kweku Essuman Quansah, noted that Huawei had always contributed to supporting the country’s economy by paying taxes and creating jobs.
He added that as the ICT partner of Ghana’s government, Huawei would continue to train more ICT talents, contribute to digital transformation and promote the socio-economic development of Ghana.
