Ministry withdraws recognition of Ghana Swimming Association over governance concerns
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has withdrawn recognition of the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA), declaring that the body cannot represent Ghana at any local or international aquatics competitions, including the upcoming African Aquatics Swimming Championships in Algeria.
In a press release issued by the Head of PR & Communications, Bagbara Tanko, the Ministry disclosed that it had received numerous petitions from a majority of Ghanaian swimming clubs and organised stakeholders calling for free and fair elections in accordance with the GSA Constitution.
Withdrawal of recognition remains in effect
The Ministry stated that the withdrawal of recognition issued by the National Sports Authority (NSA) to the Ghana Swimming Association is lawful, remains in effect, and has not been rescinded.
"The Ministry and the NSA shall not recognise the outcome of any congress that the erstwhile GSA holds in violation of the GSA Constitution and discussions held with the Ministry and the NSA," the statement read.
GSA cannot select swimmers
The Ministry further declared that the GSA and its Executive Council cannot represent or organise the representation of Ghana at any aquatics competitions, whether local or international.
The GSA also cannot engage in or supervise the selection of Ghana representatives to any swimming competitions, including the upcoming African Aquatics Swimming Championships.
Demand for accountability
The Ministry said it supports the NSA's demand for accountability from the erstwhile GSA, including the rendering of audited accounts, which the GSA claims have been submitted to World Aquatics.
Stabilisation Committee sought
The Ministry has communicated with World Aquatics for the appointment of a Stabilisation Committee to oversee Ghana's aquatics and engage the Electoral Commission of Ghana to hold elections in accordance with the Constitution.
"In the event that World Aquatics fails or refuses to respond in the coming days, the NSA shall appoint an Interim Committee to undertake the said actions," the Ministry stated.
"All these are to safeguard the future and careers of our talented Ghanaian swimmers and the community."
