Unichem Ghana Group has completed a sweeping transformation of two major wards at the 37 Military Hospital, marking one of the most significant community health interventions undertaken by a private pharmaceutical company in recent years.
The refurbished Tamaklo Ward and the Nkrumah Children’s Ward were formally unveiled at a ceremony in Accra, where families, military officers and healthcare workers gathered to witness what hospital authorities described as a renewal of hope. The event sparked emotional scenes, with healthcare workers moved to tears and soldiers expressing gratitude for what they called a life-changing intervention.
The extensive works included new sanitation facilities, structural repairs, electrical upgrades, new blinds, curtains, bedsheets, gowns and improved layouts designed to enhance comfort, cleanliness and clinical efficiency. The children’s ward also received a full facelift, featuring a colourful mural and a visit from Luey the Lion, the mascot of Luex Healthcare, whose presence brought excitement and encouragement to young patients.
Sir Raj Mohan, Chairman of Unichem Ghana Group, said the renovation reflected the founding vision of the company’s forebear, Dr Mohan. “Our founder, and fore father Dr Mohan believed that true leadership lies not in profit, but in purpose. This renovation is a reflection of his lifelong commitment to building a healthier Ghana,” he said.
The Director of the Unichem Group, Jason Nana Yaw Mohan, emphasised the company’s longstanding ethos of compassion-led healthcare. “Care is our DNA. It is who we are. Healing begins with the environment. Medicines treat. But compassion transforms. By rebuilding these wards, we honour our duty to Ghana. To heal lives and touch souls,” he said.
The refurbished Tamaklo Ward now features 20 new toilets, improved drainage, refreshed beds and furniture, upgraded electrical systems, and new curtains and blinds designed to provide greater privacy. The Nkrumah Children’s Ward underwent a complete makeover to create a more welcoming and uplifting environment for young patients and their caregivers.
As part of its broader community health drive, Unichem also supplied Wormbat-branded waste bins and health education kits to support hygiene, infection prevention and public health awareness. Hospital authorities commended Wormbat for contributing to national sanitation and deworming campaigns, describing the educational tools as vital for long-term behavioural change.
Senior officers of the Ghana Armed Forces Health Services and managers of the 37 Military Hospital praised the initiative, noting that it demonstrated the potential of private–public collaboration to improve national healthcare delivery.
The project forms part of Unichem’s long-term “Caring for Communities” initiative, which focuses on strengthening healthcare infrastructure, supporting public hospitals, expanding health education, supplying subsidised essential medicines and investing in local pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Unichem continues to promote its locally supported, clinically proven products, including Luex Cough Syrup, Stomocaine, Antacid Plus and Diclolex, which have been widely used across Ghana for decades. The company says its mission aligns with national ambitions to position Ghana as a pharmaceutical hub, improve drug affordability and build resilient regional supply chains.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony drew widespread attention, with media capturing the reactions of patients, doctors and soldiers who expressed deep appreciation for the renewed facilities. Organisers said the event symbolised “love in action,” adding that it reinforced how moral responsibility and corporate leadership could combine to change lives and strengthen national health systems.
Unichem Group, founded more than fifty years ago by the late Dr HD Mohan, has grown into one of West Africa’s most trusted pharmaceutical institutions. Built on principles of compassion, integrity, service and healing, the company says its mission remains unchanged: to heal lives, touch souls and serve generations with trusted healthcare solutions.
