Unichem Group honoured for Excellence in Pharma Distribution at Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana Awards

Unichem Ghana Group has been awarded the Excellence in Wholesale & Distribution honour at the maiden edition of the Pharma Excellence Awards organised by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH).

The ceremony, held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, brought together industry leaders, policymakers, regulators, and innovators to celebrate outstanding achievements in Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector.

For Unichem, the award represents more than corporate recognition — it is a tribute to decades of service and sacrifice. Founded over 60 years ago by the late Dr H.D. Mohan, the company started with a bold vision to expand access to life-saving medicines across West Africa. Today, Unichem serves as a gateway for global pharmaceutical giants including Boots, Pfizer, Sanofi, Wallace, and Walter Ritter, facilitating their entry into African markets.

Speaking after receiving the award, third-generation leader and Director of Unichem Group, Mr Jason Nana Yaw Mohan, paid homage to the legacy and values that continue to guide the company’s operations.

“We are deeply humbled by this honour. This award is a tribute to the trust of the people, the relentless dedication of our team, and the power of collaboration across the pharmaceutical ecosystem — from suppliers and regulators to pharmacists and patients. Thank you, PSGH. We will continue to serve with integrity, grow with humility, and deliver with purpose,” he said.

Beyond distribution, Unichem is making notable strides in local pharmaceutical manufacturing and innovation. Through its partnership with LUEX Healthcare (UK), the company manufactures high-quality medicines at its modern Accra-based facility. This collaboration is helping transform Africa’s pharmaceutical landscape by producing trusted medications locally under global standards. The LUEX product line — including WORMBAT, Ghana’s leading family dewormer; DICLOLEX, known for reliable pain relief; and LUEX Cough Syrup — has rapidly become a household name.

The Pharma Excellence Awards, according to PSGH President Dr Samuel Kow Donkoh, aim to highlight and celebrate the contributions of key players driving the sector’s growth through ethics, innovation, and impact. Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah-Akandoh, who graced the occasion, commended the PSGH for recognising local pharmaceutical resilience and underscoring the role of the private sector in achieving national health goals.

“In a continent where access still defines survival, Unichem and LUEX are proving that with consistency, collaboration, and conviction, Africa can do more than heal — Africa can lead,” the company affirmed in a statement.
