DSTN now Kofi Kwame
At a time when Western music is posing a threat to that of African music, it is a delight to know that many young artistes are toeing the highlife line.
One of such is the duo KofiKwame. They are out with their new single titled, Obirefremi which features highlife artiste, Bisa Kdei.
Produced by Shortcut Studios owned by Bisa Kdei, Obirefremi is a love song which talks about the need for people to come to the rescue of their lovers when they are in need.
It is a highlife tune delivered with a funky rhythm which KofiKwame says is their innovation of “contemporary highlife”.
“No genre of music identifies who we are as Ghanaians like highlife. It is our own and we need to polish it up to meet with the changing trends in music. Highlife is still a preferred choice even for the young now because the young artistes have given it that youthful feel to attract a large following.
“The likes of Kwabena Kwabena and KK Fosu have given their own style to highlife music so the younger ones like us can also do better. We can’t let highlife die because it is one of the major genres that projects our culture,” Kofi Kwakye, a member of the group told Showbiz on Monday.
Formerly known as DSTN, KofiKwame was made up of three members, Kofi Kwakye, Kwame Toka and Koo Kyere until the departure of the latter from the group.
Kofi Kwakye said they adopted the name, KofiKwame to reflect their new identity which is to project the Ghanaian culture through their music.
Signed on to Distinction Entertainment, KofiKwame came out with their maiden album, Sunday, under the management of Bola Ray’s Empire Entertainment.
The album was recorded by award-winning engineer, Appietus, and was a mix of contemporary popular styles. It also featured singer, Yvonne ‘She’ Ohene-Djan.
Some of their songs are 2-Much, Man Shado and Odee.
