Highlife meets jazz at +233
Lovers of highlife and jazz will have the privilege of appreciating where the two sparkling genres converge on Saturday, December 17 at a bash themed ‘Highlife Meets Jazz’ at the +233 Jazz Bar and Grill in Accra.
Organised by the +233 venue in partnership with the Jazz Society of Ghana, the 9.00pm programme’s high point will be a performance by guitarist Alfred Kari Bannerman supported by Victor Dey and Friends. Guest performers are Agya Koo Nimo, Pat Thomas and Ebo Taylor.
The London-based Kari Bannerman is an extremely fine player who easily straddles several styles of music such as highlife, rock, blues and jazz. He played with the Boombaya band here before moving to the United Kingdom in the 1970s.
He has since performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra to critical acclaim and also toured extensively and recorded with the famous Osibisa Afro-rock band.
Kari has also played with several top-notch acts such as A.B.Crentsil, Koo Nimo, Hugh Masekela, Pat Thomas, Ronnie Laws and Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac fame. He currently travels the world with a band called Ibibio Sound Machine.
The concert will be preceded at 7.00pm with a presentation on the nature of jazz and highlife by musicologist and musician, Prof John Collins.
Admission to the show is free for paid-up members of the Jazz Society of Ghana
