Big Wu Headlines Black Stars Send-Off Dinner in Alexandria, Virginia Ahead of World Cup

Renowned Ghanaian-American MC, entertainer and cultural ambassador, Jeremiah "Big Wu" Acquah, was one of the leading personalities at the Official Black Stars Send-Off Dinner held at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Virginia, ahead of Ghana's international engagements in the United States.

The prestigious event brought together members of the Ghanaian diaspora, business leaders, community organisations, government officials, media personalities and football supporters for an evening dedicated to celebrating the national football team.

Known for his energetic stage presence and commitment to promoting Ghanaian culture abroad, Big Wu played a key role in engaging attendees, welcoming guests and helping create an atmosphere of unity and national pride throughout the evening. He interacted with players, supporters and community leaders while underscoring the importance of strengthening ties between Ghana and its global diaspora.

A powerful symbol of national unity

The dinner served as more than just a send-off. It became a powerful symbol of national unity, bringing Ghanaians from various backgrounds together to rally behind the Black Stars ahead of their international assignments.

Photos from the event captured Big Wu alongside Black Stars players, distinguished guests, community leaders and young supporters who were inspired by the chance to interact with their football heroes. A signed commemorative football presented during the evening became a symbol of the bond between the team and the Ghanaian community in the diaspora.

'They represent the dreams of every Ghanaian'

Speaking after the event, Big Wu emphasised the significance of supporting the national team and celebrating Ghanaian achievements on the global stage.

"The Black Stars represent more than football. They represent the dreams, resilience, and pride of every Ghanaian around the world. It was an honour to stand with our community and send them off with love and support," he said.

The evening further demonstrated the growing influence of the Ghanaian diaspora in cultural diplomacy and in strengthening international relationships through sports and community engagement.

Acknowledgements

Big Wu extended his appreciation to the Ghana Football Association for its leadership and dedication to Ghana football, and for creating platforms that connect the national team with supporters across the world.

He also thanked the Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective for its vision, coordination and commitment to empowering the Ghanaian diaspora, as well as the Ghana United Business Association for its continued efforts in promoting Ghanaian excellence, entrepreneurship and community development globally.

A special note of gratitude was extended to the Black Stars players, coaching staff, technical team and management for their professionalism and commitment to representing Ghana with pride.

Big Wu also acknowledged the Mayor of Alexandria and the City of Alexandria for their hospitality in welcoming the Ghanaian community and the national team.

World Cup campaign ahead

The send-off dinner took place as the Black Stars finalised their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicked off on 11th June across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ghana will open their Group L campaign against Panama on 17th June in Toronto, followed by England on 23rd June in Boston and Croatia on 27th June in Philadelphia.

The event served as a rallying point for the diaspora community, who have organised various activities to support the Black Stars throughout the tournament. The Ghana United Business Association and the Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective have been instrumental in coordinating diaspora support for the national team.

Big Wu's involvement in the send-off dinner highlights the growing role of Ghanaian cultural ambassadors in bridging the gap between the homeland and the diaspora. His energetic MC duties and cultural advocacy have made him a respected figure in the Ghanaian-American community.

The evening concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and unity as supporters, players and officials looked ahead to the World Cup challenge, with the Black Stars aiming to make Ghana proud on the global stage.
