CANAL+ and MultiChoice spotlight African women with special programming for Women’s Month
CANAL+ and its subsidiary MultiChoice have launched a continent-wide campaign celebrating the influence and achievements of women across entertainment, sports and storytelling as part of activities marking International Women’s Month.
The initiative, unveiled in Accra on March 6, forms part of efforts by the two media companies to highlight the role women continue to play in shaping African culture and narratives through television, film and sport.
Across Africa and beyond, women continue to shape and elevate the stories that define societies, with the entertainment industry increasingly driven by actresses, directors, producers and writers who bring authenticity and depth to productions broadcast across the CANAL+ network.
In sport, women are also redefining competition and leadership, both on the field and behind the scenes, while inspiring a new generation of athletes and commentators.
To mark the occasion, CANAL+ and MultiChoice have introduced a dedicated campaign titled “We are… because she is.” The campaign includes a 90-second promotional video produced in both English and French, which will be broadcast on the group’s television channels and digital platforms in more than 35 African countries.
Throughout the month, viewers on DStv and GOtv will also be treated to a selection of programmes and films centred on female characters, achievements and perspectives.
Among the local highlights is the historical drama M’asaase, broadcast on Akwaaba Magic, which follows events in 17th-century Ghana where an ambitious queen seeks to dominate newly discovered mineral resources while controlling farmland across her kingdom. The dance drama Leg Work returns for a second season, focusing on the experiences of a young woman navigating life in a new all-female dance group, while Market Queens explores intrigue and conflict surrounding a market redevelopment and a controversial cooperative fund.
International productions will also feature prominently during the month, including action and drama titles such as Wonder Woman, Ocean’s Eight and Lucy, alongside lifestyle and reality programmes such as The Pioneer Woman and Sister Wives. Sporting content highlighting women athletes will also be aired through wrestling programmes on TNT Africa.
The companies say the programming line-up aims to reflect the diversity, resilience and creativity of women while amplifying their stories to audiences across the continent.
The campaign also underscores the growing influence of women not only as performers and athletes but also as creators and leaders whose contributions continue to shape Africa’s cultural and entertainment landscape.
