The celebrities, including Sandra Ankobiah, Ama Abebrese, Nana Aba Anamoah, hiplife artiste Edem, and Big Brother Africa representative, Elikem Kumordzi, signed up to the Protect the Goal’ campaign of the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) at a ceremony  held at the UNAIDS offices in Accra last Tuesday.

As part of the campaign, they pledged to use their various brands to push forward the agenda of reducing HIV/ AIDS in the world, particularly Ghana, through educating people on the need to practice safe sex.

There were video recordings of their pledges to get the many people inspired by their works to appreciate the relevance of the campaign and the need to protect the world against HIV/AIDS in the face of its prevalence.

The Protect the Goal campaign is a joint initiative between UNAIDS and the world football governing body, FIFA.

The aim of the campaign is to use sports as means of educating people on the prevention of HIV/AIDS. The campaign is expected to create awareness of the disease.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Lawyer and television presenter, Sandra Ankobiah, said that the world could not afford to lose the fight against HIV/AIDS, since it was claiming lives of potential future leaders.

“HIV/AIDS  has claimed the lives of potential leaders but all hope is not lost. This campaign is a laudable initiative and we are hopeful that just as football fanatics are passionate about the game, so will they be about this campaign,” she stated.

The Country Director for UNAIDS, Girmay Haile, said the Protect the Goal campaign was part of measures put in place to achieve the UNAIDS 2015 vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.
