EDITOR’S LENS: Good and bad influence of celebrities

Dancehall star Shatta Wale's recent detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has highlighted the considerable sway celebrities hold over their fans.

In a show of solidarity, his fans, known as the ‘SM Family’, flooded EOCO's offices after his arrest.

Despite being released on a GH¢10 million bail with two sureties, HIS fans lingered, seemingly driven by their dedication to the artiste, even after a word from Shatta Wale himself in a live video that he had been released.

This episode undoubtedly highlights the significant influence celebrities wield over their fans and in society. That power comes great responsibility.

While admittedly celebrities inspire and drive positive change, they can also perpetuate negative lifestyles and behaviours.

It is in this light that celebrities have to recognise the power they wield and use it to drive positive change by bringing attention to critical issues, inspiring their fans, and creating a lasting impact.

For instance, Leonardo DiCaprio's environmental documentary "Before the Flood" reached millions, raising awareness about climate change.

Similarly, Emma Watson's work with the UN Women's HeForShe campaign has promoted gender equality and encouraged legislative progress.

Ghanaian celebrities have a massive following on social media, and their actions can significantly influence the youth.

Given the country's struggle with drug abuse, particularly among young people who are hooked on "Wonim Red", Graphic Showbiz urges celebrities to be mindful of their actions and leverage their influence to combat this menace.

By taking on a leadership role in the fight against substance abuse, these influential figures can help raise awareness about the dangers of drug use and promote positive behaviours among their fans.

Notably, Okomfour Kwadee, who has struggled with substance abuse, is set to lead a campaign against drug abuse in the Ashanti Region, demonstrating the potential for celebrities to drive meaningful change.

Great influence, however, comes with great responsibility. Celebrities must be mindful of the messages they convey and the actions they take.

To ensure that their influence drives positive change, celebrities should collaborate with established organisations to amplify their impact and credibility. An example is Okyeame Kwame’s partnership with MDS-Lancet on his annual Hepatitis B campaign.

By recognising their responsibility and using their platform wisely, they can inspire their fans, raise awareness and contribute to a more compassionate and equitable society for all.
