Thousands of mourners filled the Black Star Square in Accra on Saturday night, August 2, 2025 for a candlelight vigil in memory of the late highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

The event, which came a week after his passing on July 26, 2025, brought together musicians, public figures and fans from across the country.

The vigil, organised under the auspices of the Creative Arts Agency and the musician’s family, featured live performances of some of Daddy Lumba’s most popular songs, including Aben Wo Ha, All Girls Cheat and Yooyo. Fans held candles aloft as they sang along, turning the square into a moving tribute to his decades-long musical career.

Veteran highlife musician Pat Thomas, Bessa Simons, rapper Sarkodie and Kwabena Kwabena among many others attended.

At one point, Pat Thomas took to the stage to perform Kabila, prompting the crowd to rise to their feet, clap and sing along.

The musician’s stood alongside their children to read tributes. They described Daddy Lumba as “a musical genius whose songs shaped Ghana’s highlife sound.”

The vigil ended with a minute of silence observed by the large crowd. It was followed by a joint rendition of Daddy Lumba’s songs, which organisers described as a public celebration of his enduring legacy.
