Mastering stagecraft is crucial for success - DJ Ashmen advises young artists

POPULAR Disc Jockey, DJ Ashmen, has emphasised the critical role of stagecraft in the success of musicians, urging artistes, especially budding ones, to invest in their performance skills to enhance their careers.

To him, the lack of education on the importance of investing in their stagecraft to build a strong image is a significant challenge, particularly among young artistes. He warned this could spell disaster for the industry. (Read We can’t ignore Akon’s contribution to the global dominance of Afrobeats - Sarkodie)

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz on Tuesday, May 27, DJ Ashmen expressed surprise that while older artistes go to great lengths to deliver impressive live performances, many young artistes prioritise social media fame over refining their craft, overlooking the significance of live shows as a key to their career success.

“These new acts will not listen. They are missing the mark by focusing solely on online popularity. Live performances are paramount; they can make or break your career.”

“We all saw the performance of Stonebwoy at last year’s Ghana Music Awards ceremony and this year as well. You could tell that this was someone who scripted his performance and delivered on stage.”

“And there are the likes of Samini, Sarkodie and even oldies such as Amakye Dede who know how to hold a crowd with their stagecraft.”

“The lack of education in our showbiz, especially the music space, is much higher than the mountain," he stated.

DJ Ashmen urged aspiring musicians to recognise the importance of collaborating with skilled DJs and the use of proper sound equipment, such as stems, in their performances. “This could make you look good even if you are not a good performer but these young acts don’t even know this.”

"A good live performance requires the right technical setup, which many of our young artistes are not aware of. This knowledge is essential for enhancing their performances," he explained.

His comments also touched on the changing dynamics within the music industry, questioning whether the younger generation's approach to music has rendered traditional performance skills outdated. (Read How fake views, bought likes, and stolen streams create artificial celebs)

Echoing DJ Ashmen's sentiments, veteran musician and President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons, reinforced the importance of rigorous rehearsal.

In a social media post, he urged young acts to approach rehearsals with purpose and dedication. "Rehearsal is not merely a formality; it's where your talent is refined and your performance is crafted."

He encouraged young musicians to approach rehearsal with focus and determination, highlighting its role in fostering creativity and excellence.

"Great musicians don’t just show up on stage, they rehearse to perfect their act. At every rehearsal, mistakes are corrected and innovations are born. Don’t take your rehearsal time for granted—be punctual, engaged and ready to grow," he concluded.
