National Theatre of Ghana revives music education department

The National Theatre of Ghana has relaunched its Music Education Department with an Open Day Programme held on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the Theatre’s premises in Accra.

The event brought together students, educators, arts professionals, and cultural enthusiasts to celebrate the power of creativity, learning, and the performing arts in national development.

The relaunch is the beginning of a renewed commitment by the National Theatre to advance arts education, nurture young talent, and promote cultural appreciation through music and performance.

Participating schools showcased their talents in dance, drama, debate, and music, highlighting the importance of creative expression in education.

In his opening address, Mr. Ato Quayson, Director of the National Symphony Orchestra, welcomed guests and emphasised the purpose of the gathering; to reconnect with one of the Theatre’s core pillars, which is arts education.

He noted that the Music Education Department will serve as a platform for young people to explore their creativity and for schools to integrate the performing arts into their learning environments.

“The purpose of this event is to formally reintroduce the Music Education Department, a vital arm of the Theatre that seeks to nurture young talent, promote music literacy, and foster appreciation for Ghana’s diverse artistic heritage.

“Through programmes such as this, we aim to create opportunities for children and young people to develop their creative potential and to build the next generation of musicians, composers, and performing artists.

“Today’s Open Day also provides a platform for students from participating schools to showcase their skills in dance, drama, debate, and music. It is our hope that this experience will inspire them to see the arts not only as a form of expression but also as a path of purpose, discipline, and national pride,” he stated.

The Music Education Department’s Open Day Programme forms part of the Theatre’s broader efforts to empower the next generation of artists and educators while strengthening Ghana’s creative economy.

Through capacity-building, mentorship, and practical engagement, the Department will foster collaboration between schools, communities, and cultural institutions to sustain Ghana’s performing arts heritage.

In a keynote address, Ag. Executive Director of the National Theatre, Mr. Henry Herbert Malm, described the relaunch as both a milestone and a movement.

He stated that the revival of the department aligns with the Government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy, which seeks to expand economic opportunities and create new income streams for creative professionals such as musicians, educators, composers, and facilitators.

“Through this department, we envision a space where young people can explore their creativity, where schools can integrate music and performance into learning, and where future composers, instrumentalists, and performing artists can find mentorship and inspiration.

“We are not just relaunching a department, we are reigniting a movement that places the arts at the heart of education and national development,” he said.

The Music Education Department has long been instrumental in cultivating young talent, fostering music literacy, and passing on our rich artistic heritage to the next generation.

With the official declaration by Mr. Malm, the Music Education Department of the National Theatre of Ghana has been formally relaunched, opening a new chapter in the Theatre’s mission to inspire, educate, and transform through the arts.
