In an interview with Showbiz last Saturday, Mercury Quaye, founder of the Ghana DJ Awards, said the award was instituted three years ago as a means to recognise and reward DJs for their hardwork.

“I noticed that DJs in the country are not given the needed recognition even though they are integral to the success of our events and parties. You go to most events and the DJ is relegated to the background but the truth is the moment the DJ puts off his mixer, everything comes to an end,” he said.

Mercury Quaye mentioned that the award committee would be looking out for the contributions the DJs have made to Ghanaian music scene in terms of promotion by playing on radio, professionalism and performance at major events.

In a statement to the press, Ken Addo, executive member of the Ghana DJ Awards, said entries received will be screened for compliance with the award rules and also to ensure that the entries were submitted in the correct category.

“The purpose of this process, known as vetting, is to ensure that each entry is eligible and not at risk of disqualification later. The sorting committee of the Ghana DJ Awards will perform this function. No artistic or technical judgments are made about entries at this stage,” he said.

“After submission, qualifying entries would be sent to the judges for adjudication. A panel of judges in accordance with the defined guidelines adjudicates all the categories in the awards, with the exception of non-voting categories. The public is not involved at this stage at all,” Ken stressed.

He added that there was a different panel of judges for each category, but depending on the particular expertise of a judge, some judges might serve on more than one panel.

Final nominations will be announced at the main launch of the 2015 Ghana DJ Awards in January. The judging vote will count for 70% while the public vote will count for 30%.

The awards will consist of 24 categories, of which 22 are open for entries and

the awards ceremony is set to hold at the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday, February 21.
