Slow but sure Detty December!
Unlike previous years when Ghana’s December festivities kicked off with a bang as early as late October, last year’s(2024) began on a much slower note.
This shift could largely be attributed to the country’s general election held on December 7 which dominated the national spotlight.
With political activities taking centre stage, the festive buzz took a back seat. However, once the elections were over on December 7, the nation sprang to life reclaiming its signature celebratory spirit and welcoming an exciting line-up of events.
The post-election period saw Ghana transform into an entertainment hub, hosting an impressive roster of artistes. From celebrated homegrown talents such as Sarkodie, Black Sherif, Efya, Samini, and Stonebwoy to international icons such as South Africa’s Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Nigeria’s Shallipopi, the music scene was electrifying.
The highlight of the season was the AfroFuture Culture Beach Jam held for the first time at the Polo Beach from December 28 to 29. The two-day extravaganza was one for the books featuring remarkable performances by Ghanaian stars including Joey B, Pappy Kojo, King Promise and KiDi. Nigeria’s Shallipopi also delivered a show-stopping act that left patrons in awe.
Behind the decks, DJ Williamo, DJ K-Dawg, DJ Shagy and DJ Tunez kept the energy levels high with their masterful music mixes, ensuring the crowd stayed on their feet throughout the event.
In addition to Culture Beach Jam, other major concerts lit up the festive calendar. Sarkodie’s Rapperholic, Black Sherif’s Zaama Disco Concert, Stonebwoy’s Bhim Concert, The African Festival and M.anifest’s Manifestivities were among the top-tier events. Promiseland, Detty Rave and Rhythms on Da Runway also catered to diverse musical tastes, leaving no one out of the festive cheer.
Record-breaking attempt
One interesting event of the season was Tourism Ambassador Afua Asantewaa Aduonum’s second attempt at setting a Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest individual singing marathon.
She achieved 121 hours and 39 minutes of uninterrupted singing, surpassing her previous effort. The attempted record-breaking event took place at the Heroes’ Park, located within the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. It began in the early hours of December 21, 2024, and ended on December 25, 2024.
Over the five-day singing marathon, the 34-year-old media personality and singer performed more than 200 songs, showcasing an array of Ghanaian music genres, including gospel, Highlife, Afrobeats and Hiplife.
Regional fever
Festivities were not confined to Accra alone. Across the country, December in Ghana was a true extravaganza, with each region adding its unique flavour.
In the Western Region, the streets came alive with the return of its vibrant street carnival. Colourfully dressed masqueraders, accompanied by lively brass bands, filled the main streets with joy and rhythm. The celebrations culminated in Kofi Kinaata’s Made in Tadi Concert, featuring a star-studded line-up including Samini, Fameye and Kwaw Kese.
The Ashanti Regional capital Kumasi hosted one of the most anticipated music concerts - Event of the Year. Held on December 25, 2024, at Rattray Park, the concert featured electrifying performances by legendary Highlife icon Daddy Lumba, alongside contemporary stars such as Black Sherif, Kofi Kinaata, Fameye, King Paluta, and Wendy Shay among others.
Additionally, local musicians organised concerts to ensure residents in every corner of the nation experienced the festive spirit. From small-town gatherings to regional mega-events, the air was filled with the sounds of music, laughter and shared joy.
Festive atmosphere
Though the celebrations started late, the festive spirit slowly enveloped the country by early December. Major roads and streets were adorned with dazzling Christmas lights and decorations, creating a magical ambience. Human and vehicular traffic intensified as tourists, revellers and diasporans flocked to the country, eager to experience the much-anticipated December in Ghana celebrations.
Late shoppers also added to the bustling atmosphere, completing their festive preparations, while hotels, restaurants and event centres ramped up their offerings to provide visitors with an unforgettable experience.
Security and traffic challenges
Ghana maintained its reputation for safe, incident-free celebrations thanks to a strong security presence at event venues. However, the festivities were not without their challenges. Traffic congestion became a significant issue in major cities, slowing human and vehicular movement. Despite this, the joyous spirit of the season overshadowed these inconveniences.
December in GH Initiative
Launched in 2019 by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, the December in GH initiative aims to position Ghana as a top December holiday destination. By offering a signature calendar of events, the programme attracts diasporans and tourists looking to reconnect with their roots while enjoying a vibrant blend of cultural richness and entertainment.
