Sweet and sour grapes over Music Award nominations

Hiplife artiste, Guru is very disappointed that his hit song Lapaz Toyota was not nominated in any of the categories. According to Guru, Lapaz Toyota was among the popular songs that enjoyed airplay within the year under review.

Speaking with Showbiz over the phone last Monday, Guru said he had expected his song to have been nominated in four categories; Song of the Year, Hiplife Song of the Year, Hiplife Artiste of the Year and Record of the Year.

“I deserve to know why Lapaz Toyota wasn’t nominated when it  was more popular than most of the songs on the nominations list.” . If Lapaz Toyota was the official song for the Easter celebrations what are the organizers of the Ghana Music Awards talking about, I need an explanation.”

Hiplife artiste Asem who has seven nominations is still unhappy that he was not nominated for the topmost Artiste of the Year award.  On Twitter, the ‘Bye Bye’ hit maker said: “Yes I got seven nominations, am I excited about it? Not really because when you deserve diamonds and they give you gold, you ask why the diamonds did not come.”

“Okay so let’s go straight to the point and ask VGMA why I wasn’t nominated for Artist of the Year and Hip/Hiplife Artist of the Year.

“Guys let not focus on who shouldn’t be there, the question is why I wasn’t there for Artist Of the Year. From where I stand, I met the criteria.

“You see it’s a matter of principle, it’s not like it’s my dream to be Artist of the Year, if nominated it’s possible I won’t even win. But in life, if you don’t stand for something, you fall for everything”.

On their part, hiplife duo, R2bees cannot stop thanking their fans for making them, who they are. According to them getting nine nominations is as a result of hard work. “We believe we really worked hard so it’s not surprising we have nine nominations. We thank our management team and everyone who has supported us this far and we promise to give Ghanaians good music all the time.”

Similarly, gospel artiste, Cwesi Oteng has been thanking his fans and God after he grabbed six nominations. He said on his social media wall soon after the nominations were released: “Just got six nominations at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards folks, including Artiste of the Year!

“I did not get recognised, I did not get nominated. We did get recognised, We got nominated. It’s us not only Cwesi. To Everyone who has been part of the many years of struggle, I dedicate this nominations for contemporary gospel. We got recognised.”

According to M.anifest, all three nominations he had for this year’s Ghana Music Awards was from the same song, Makaa Maka.  “Big shout out to Kwabena Jones on production! Nominated in three categories-Songwriter of the Year, Best Rapper and Hip-Hop Song of the Year”, he said.

Raquel after getting two nominations said “we give thnx xxx. At last year’s VGMA, I was nominated for five awards and lost all lol but it’s all gud. I’m grateful to have been nominated”.

Some fans of Sarkodie have questioned the VGMA why their idol was not nominated in any of the categories but Sarkodie’s management has explained that Sarkodie did not submit any entry so his fans should not be surprised that he was only nominated for collaborations.

Perhaps the most scathing remarks have been those made by FOKN Bois who re-named the awards as Ghana Amusing Awards.

Here are some  unedited twitter messages from other musicians as captured by Ghanashowbiz.com.  Ded Buddy: Award shows don’t inspire me…My fans Do! Thankx to every fan who msgd me to show their concern. GBless!
