The ‘Grandmaster’ Godwin Avenorgbo passes on at age 78

Veteran broadcaster and communications expert, Godwin Avenorgbo, has passed away at age 78.

He died on Monday, August 19, 2024.

His family from Sokpoe in the Volta Region confirmed his sudden death on Tuesday morning to Graphic Online, a day after he passed.

"It is with deep sorrow that the Avenorgbo and allied families announce the passing of our beloved Godwin Avenorgbo (The Grandmaster)."

"He departed peacefully, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever remain in our hearts. The family kindly asks for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," the family said.

The family said funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

The Grandmaster, as he was affectionately known was the master of ceremony (MC) for many national events and was known for his baritone voice and command of both language and his act.

He was married to Mrs Aimee Avenorgbo.

The native of Sokpoe in the Volta Region was the father of Jerry Avenorgbo, Cleopatra Avenorgbo and Chester Avenorgbo.

He was last seen publicly at the Ghana Journalists Association's (GJA) 75th-anniversary event last Thursday and was the Chairman of the GJA anniversary planning committee. 

His passing has come as a shock to his peers and mentees.

Godwin Avenorgbo leaves behind a legacy of dedication and excellence, remembered for his iconic voice and engaging presentation style during his long tenure at GBC.

He anchored numerous programmes as a journalist and broadcaster, later transitioning to a distinguished career in public relations and corporate communications.

Until his passing, he continued to serve as a respected communications strategist for various organisations in Ghana.
