‘The MPs DigiRead Train’ starts tomorrow

The maiden edition of ‘The MPs DigiRead Train’, an initiative to promote the culture of reading among children is set to come off at the Dunk Library, Jamestown, Accra on Wednesday, June 30.

The reading project is a partnership between World Reader Ghana and Ghana Reads Initiative to engage Members of Parliament (MPs) on the use of the World Reader app as a means of encouraging students to cultivate the habit of reading.

The MP for Odododiodio Constituency, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, will lead the first edition of the project tomorrow.

‘The MPs’ DigiRead Train’ series will comprise two major segments namely, “A reading session with MPs” and “After Reading Conversations”.

“A Reading Session with MPs” will involve MPs reading selected parts of a book on the World Reader app with students drawn from schools within their constituencies.

Other important personalities within or connected to the communities/constituencies will also join the MPs for the reading session.

“The After Reading Conversation” will be a dialogue on the selected read pages including the theme, style of writing and the author.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Poet/Spoken word artiste, Oswald Okaitei, a member of the organising team said 'The MPs DigiRead Train’ project had come at a time when the culture of reading among students was fast declining.

He pointed out that apart from its academic benefits, reading offered other benefits including building vocabulary, preventing cognitive decline, reducing stress, aiding sleep, alleviating depression and lengthening lifespan.

“The sessions will be very engaging since not all the pages of the selected books will be read to encourage participants to complete on their own after the session.

“Also, in order to open up the participation size, virtual platforms such as Zoom, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube will be included,” he stated. There will be other interesting segments such as "Blast Balloon" and "Read the Paragraph."
