When Koforidua prison inmates had a p-a-r-t-y

It was all joy as all the 709 inmates of the Koforidua Prison were recently provided with sumptuous food and soft drinks to celebrate  Idul Fitri.

The food together with 20 cartons of body cream and 20 cartons of laundry and bathing soap were provided by Alhaji Mustapha Oti Boaten to alleviate the suffering of the inmates. 

According to Alhaji Mustapha Oti Boaten, an Ahmadi businessman based at Suhum who also promised to donate 30 bags of cement and three trips of sand to improve the infrastructure of the prisonsaid that the gesture was in line with the teachings of the Koran to make life bearable for the underprivileged especially those in distress.

The donor who was accompanied by the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Antwi Boasiako, his deputy, Miss Mavis Ama Frempong, the Oyokohene who is also a member of Council of State Nana Kodua Kese and the Deputy Eastern Regional Police Commander, ACP Abass Abaa and other Ahmadis said he had all along desired to show his love for the prisoners.

Quoting extensively from the Koran, Alhaji Mustapha OtiBoaten said it was unfortunate for the inmates to be in such a situation and urged those who had the  means to help to alleviate their suffering.

He also advised the inmates, whom he described as useful citizens to be careful not to fall into temptations again when they were released but to acquire decent vocations to earn a living.

Mr Boasiako Sekyere who, on behalf of the Regional Co-ordinating Council pledged to give out 40 bags of cement and three trips of sand to further improve facilities at the prison, said the government was committed to the welfare of prisoners. He advised the inmates to turn over a new leaf when freed and contribute their quota for the development of the country.

Nana Kodua Kese also spoke at length advising the inmates not to go back to their former ways.

Earlier, the Officer in charge of the facility, ACP Samuel Cobinah Otabil said his outfit was doing its best to reform the inmates and advised relatives and friends to accept them back into society when they gained their freedom.
