People and Places: Accra General Post Office

Accra, Post Office! Post Office, Accra!! Accra, Pos!!! - For many commuters and residents of Accra and surrounding communities, this is a familiar shout of drivers’ mates (conductors) of commercial vehicles (trotros) who ply their trade towards the General Post Office area, a popular destination in Accra Central.

The area holds great historical significance, being the location for the first modern British Post Office in Ghana and the headquarters of the postal service.

The General Post Office, located in the heart of Accra's Central Business District, is a historic building that has been a prominent landmark in the city since the colonial era.

This iconic building, situated on Asafoatse Nettey Road in Accra Central, has been a hub of activity for over a century, serving as a central location for postal services, financial transactions and community events.

It has a history dating back to 1877 when the colonial government moved the national capital from Cape Coast to Accra.

The headquarters of the postal service was set up in Accra and a structure, fitting for the Central Post Office, was constructed.

This iconic building was completed in 1880 and served as a hub for postal services during the colonial era.

The building's design reflects a mix of colonial and neoclassical styles, with elements of traditional Ghanaian architecture.

One of its unique features is the clock tower with clocks fitted on all four sides like the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) in London, which has become a recognisable symbol of the post office.

Aside from its visibility, the clock is set to toll every day at noon, followed by a siren, serving as a reminder for residents within a one-kilometre radius.

Other notable features include large columns supporting the roof, arched windows and doors and ornate details and mouldings.

In recent years, Ghana Post has undergone further transformations, including digitisation and the introduction of digital addresses, which have enhanced the delivery of mail and parcels.

The post office has a network of 360 branches across the country, making it one of the most extensive postal networks in Ghana.

Beyond its functional role, the Accra General Post Office, which is about 300 metres from the old office of the Central Bank (Bank of Ghana), serves as a vibrant business hub attracting locals and tourists alike.

The area is also noted for some historic landmarks such as the imposing Ghana National Trading Corporation (GNTC) Departmental Store building, WATO Club and Opera Square, which were vibrant entertainment spots years back.
