Promoting sickle cell education through faith-based organisations
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a major health concern in Ghana, affecting thousands of individuals and their families. Despite various efforts to raise awareness and provide support, there remains a significant gap in knowledge and resources at the grass-roots level.
Sickle Cell Condition Advocates’ (SICCA) mission is to bridge this gap by providing education, counselling and direct services to those affected, as well as advocating prevention through pre-conception screening.
Given the extensive reach and influence of the Faith-based organisation, partnering SICCA presents a unique opportunity to leverage a platform for widespread dissemination of information and services related to SCD.
By engaging the members of the Faith groups at the regional and local levels, we can ensure that vital information reaches communities across the country, empowering individuals to make informed decisions and access necessary support.
This partnership presents opportunities for education and awareness for the general public to know the SCD, its implications and management strategies.
It will also raise awareness of the importance of pre-conception screening as a preventive measure against SCD.
The partnership will also ensure the right counselling and support to individuals and families affected by SCD, helping them manage the condition effectively; while also establishing support groups within churches to foster a sense of community and provide ongoing assistance to affected individuals.
In partnering, capacity is built through workshops and training sessions for health personnel, leaders and community members, thereby enhancing their understanding of SCD and improving their ability to provide support.
Partnerships facilitate the establishment of Sickle Cell clinics and centres within church premises, where feasible, to provide accessible care and counselling services.
Effective partnerships help with screening processes for all during social gatherings and events.
Partnerships are needed for the advocacy and fund-raising needed to support individuals with SCD, and the promotion of activities preventing it.
It is important for communities to assist individuals who cannot afford treatment, and also support advocacy and awareness efforts.
Conclusion
Partnerships between the SICCA and the Faith groups offer a strategic approach to addressing the challenges posed by SCD.
By utilising the extensive network and influence, we can ensure that vital information and services reach those who need them most, ultimately contributing to the prevention and improved management.
