Do you know ‘why?’

“No one can teach, if by teaching we mean the transmission of knowledge, in any mechanical fashion, from one person to another.  The most that can be done is that one person who is more knowledgeable than another can, by asking a series of questions, stimulate the other to think, and so cause him to learn for himself.”- Socrates, 5th century BC

Everything we do in life is a choice and  I am sure most of us realise that. Even when you chose not to choose, you have made a choice.

Lifestyle quality is seldom achieved by accident. You have to make a choice to live in a certain way. Understanding this concept is a vital key to improving the quality of your life.

One of the common questions asked at job interviews is “why do you want to change your job” or “why do you want to leave your current job”?

Potential employers are often curious about why you want a change and even though you may be leaving your job because you dislike your boss, it, probably, is not the best answer to give.

The whole goal of this type of question is to find out if this is the right job for you.

When it comes to change in any other area, the same concept applies. Why do you want to change? Is it because it’s the latest fashion, because everyone is doing it or because someone said so?

For me, asking questions is important. Perhaps, it’s because I have always been curious. I realise that some people don’t feel comfortable with people who like asking a lot of questions, but if you don’t know why you have to do something, how will you do it well?

Asking questions is the simplest way to learn and the best way to make informed decisions.

So today, I want to know why you want to see change in your lifestyle habits. Admittedly, good habits lead to a healthy lifestyle and that is a goal we must all strive for, but do you know why you want that change?

We all have areas in our lives we need to improve or change, but the question is why? Have you ever stopped to think about it? Do you know the kind of questions you ask will determine the kind of life you lead? My objective today is to encourage you to have an enquiring mind to ask questions.

Why do I want to lose weight? Why do I want a better job? Why do I want more money? Why do I want to be happy? Why do I want to be fit? Why do I want a better relationship with my spouse? Why do I have to change my financial habits? Why? Why? Why? For that healthy lifestyle goal, the question is “why”?

A former CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, said, “We run this company on questions, not answers.” He knows that if you keep asking questions, you can keep finding better answers.

Knowing why and having the right reason for improving your life is very important. Sometimes, people are motivated by something irrelevant.

Being envious of somebody or adopting a certain lifestyle because it is considered the latest, fashionable and classy will never deliver the desired results. The same will happen if you are changing for somebody else rather than for yourself. All positive change starts from inside.

I come across too many people who want to lose weight because someone made remarks about their appearance. For example, you should lose weight because you want to be healthier rather than because a boyfriend made remarks about your appearance.

What are some positive reasons for introducing changes in your life? Becoming healthier, happier and general wellness, are probably some of the biggest and most important  motivators.

Maybe, you want to change your lifestyle in an attempt to unleash your full potential. This kind of change may involve acquiring new skills, going back to school or pursuing an entirely new professional direction.Knowing that want to make a change to improve your life is more likely to lead to a longer-lasting change.

It’s quite obvious that asking questions is the best way to learn and to move forward in life. Questions are the core of how we learn and make decisions as individuals. From going to space to finding a cure for malaria, it all began with a question.

It’s how we innovate and change as individuals. You never know, one little question could change your life. So go ahead and ask.
