Adentan Assembly honours students

The Adentan Municipal Assembly has used the Independence Day celebration to honour students who excelled in the 2019 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

A former student of The Light Academy, Ms Gifty Quaye, stood tall among her peers when she was presented with the overall prize for topping all the students who sat for the exams.

Ms Quaye, who is currently in Wesley Girls’ High School at Cape Coast in the Central Region, was honoured for scoring a total of 552 out of 600.

She was given a citation and a cash prize for her effort.

Others

Ms Yasmin Jawula Muftawu, formerly of the Victory Presbyterian Church School, came second with a raw score of 549.

She is currently pursuing General Science at the Galaxy International School, while Dzegblor Davina Mawutor, also of The Light Academy, came third with a raw score of 547.

Ms Mawutor is currently pursing General Science at the Legacy Girls Senior High School (SHS) while Caleb Elolo Mawusi, formerly of the Adenta Community School obtained a raw score of 508 came fourth.

Other awardees were Miss Jennifer Quansah, formerly of St Francis R/C School with a raw score of 495 currently in Holy Child SHS, Ms Eugenia Ahenkorah, formerly of the Adenta Community School, and currently in the Achimota SHS with the raw score of 494 and Christiana Adom, formerly of the St Francis R/C School with a raw score of 485 currently studying General Science at the Achimota SHS.

Sanitation award

The assembly also awarded some of the basic schools for their interest in sanitation. At the Kindergarten level, the Adenta Community KG took the first prize, while St Francis R/C KG, Abubakar Sidiq Islamic KG and the Otand Presby KG placed second, third and fourth respectively.

At the primary level, the Ashiyie AdMA Model Basic School topped with Sowa Din Memorial ‘1’ Primary placing second.

The ICODEHS Islamic Primary School and Knowledge & Faith Islamic School took the third and fourth places respectively.
Sowa Din Memorial ‘2’ JHS topped at the JHS level, while Mercy Islamic JHS came second. The Christian Faith Mission JHS took the third place while the Ogbojo Presby JHS placed fourth.

Addressing the students, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Adentan, Mr Daniel Alexandar Nii-Noi Adumuah, who read the anniversary speech on behalf of the President, stated that “no longer do mothers have to sell off their most treasured fabrics and jewellery, and fathers go to money lenders, to be able to see their children through senior high school.

He said the education curriculum was being changed to meet the needs of the modern economy, and prepare the young people to compete on the global stage.
The Municipal Director of Education, Mr Aaron Adarkwah, noted that the introduction of the school feeding programme had increased enrolment at the basic level while the implementation of the Free SHS, “has gained substantial increase in enrolment at the SHS level.”

Emmanuel Modey reports from Wa that during the 63rd Independence Anniversary march past at in in the Upper West Region, the Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, gave the assurance that the graduates from the various second cycle institutions in the region would find places at the two tertiary institutions next academic year.

The two tertiary institutions are the S.D. Dombo University of Business and the Integrated Development Studies and the Wa Polytechnic.

To that effect, Dr Bin Salih said all the requisite infrastructural facilities such as dormitories, dining halls, kitchens, and classroom blocks for various Senior High Schools (SHS) were being put in place to accommodate the projected increase in the students’ intake.

Participating in the parade was a contingent of 2,170 pupils and students selected from the basic level, special schools, second cycle, and tertiary institutions. The rest are personnel drawn from the security services and some civil society organisations (C SOs)with music provided by the regional regimental police band.

The parade commander was an Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) Mr Adongo Apiiya.

From Asamankese, Samuel Kyei – Boateng reports that the celebration of Ghana’s 63rd independence anniversary at Asamankese in the West Akyem Municipality last Friday took a different turn when the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress members buried their political differences and joined the schoolchildren in the march past.

The active participation of the two major political parties in the event to demonstrate the prevailing peace and unity in the area was highly appreciated by the record crowd who responded by clapping and cheering their action.

In all, a total of 960 schoolchildren from 16 primary schools, 10 Junior High Schools , four SHS and 60 cadets participated in the anniversary, which attracted the clergy,
Muslim and traditional leaders and security personnel.

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Seth Oduro-Boadu, commended the smart, colourful and impressive turnout for the event and urged the people in the municipality to jealously guide and guard the prevailing peace and stability since this year was an election year.

The MCE enumerated the significant achievements of President Akufo-Addo in the educational sector, mentioning in particular the free SHS programme, absorption of WASSCE registration fees, expansion of educational infrastructure, the school feeding programme, construction of model schools and restoration of teacher and nursing training allowances.

He appealed to all parents and guardians not to shirk their responsibilities to complement the government’s efforts at improving the performance of the schoolchildren.

Mr Oduro – Boadu stated that the assembly was working to eradicate the inadequate furniture problem in some public basic schools in the municipality as steps were far advanced to procure 2,500 dual desks for the Ghana Education Service Directorate to distribute to the needy schools.

The assembly honoured the 90-year old queen mother of Asamankese who had been on the throne for 66 years for her meritorious services and commitment to the development of Asamankese and its environs.
