Ablakwa condemns sanction meted to 14 deviant WASSCE candidates

A former Deputy Minister of Education, Okudzeto Ablakwa has described the sanction meted out to the 14 deviant West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates as “hash, high-handed, whimsical and could prove counterproductive”.

The 14 students were involved in acts of indiscipline and vandalism during the ongoing WASSCE.

Their actions have been condemned by many with a call for them to be punish to deter other students from doing same.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) in a swift reaction to the pockets of disturbances  barred 14 final year students from writing the examination forthwith.

But Mr Ablakwa said “The offending students could be made to sign a bond of good behaviour, allowed to complete the final examinations after which the release of their results may be delayed until surcharging and counselling obligations have been carried out. We do not have to destroy the future of these teenagers”.

He also urged the GES to conduct an independent investigation into circumstances that led to the incident rather than resorting to harsh punishments to tackle the problem.
