National PTA Council lauds president for reinstatement of PTAs

The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) expressed its heartfelt appreciation to the President, John Dramani Mahama, for his timely and progressive directive leading to the full reinstatement of parent-teacher associations (PTAs) in all pre-tertiary schools across the country.

It also commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for its swift action in operationalising the directive and instructing heads of institutions to immediately implement the reactivation of PTAs nationwide.

This policy move, the NCPTAs said, acknowledged the critical role PTAs had played over the years in supporting the delivery of quality education, infrastructure development and community involvement in the country's education sector.

Assure

“The National PTA Council wishes to assure the general public, parents and stakeholders that it is committed to ensuring the effective and transparent functioning of PTAs across all institutions.

“We remain firmly against any form of institutional manipulation or micro-management that undermines the independence of parental voice in education and the collaborative nature of PTAs in Ghana,” the General Secretary of the NCPTA, Raphael Kofi Gapson, said in a statement issued in Accra.

Going forward, the statement said the council would work closely with the GES and school authorities to ensure that PTA activities were aligned with best practices, guided by sound financial accountability frameworks and focused solely on the welfare and educational success of the Ghanaian child.

Guidelines

On July 16, 2025, the GES said it was going to issue further guidelines on modalities for the reinstatement of parent-teacher associations (PTAs) in senior high schools in the country.

That, it said, would include the structure, roles and financial accountability mechanisms of PTAs to ensure consistency across all schools.

“Following the recent directive by President John Dramani Mahama on the full reinstatement of PTAs in all pre-tertiary schools nationwide, management of the GES hereby directs that all heads of schools be informed to operationalise the directive with immediate effect,” the acting Director-General of the GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, said in a letter.

The letter was addressed to all regional directors of education.

“By copy of this letter, you are requested to bring this directive to the attention of all metropolitan, municipal and district directors of education under your jurisdiction, and advise heads of public senior high, technical and STEM schools to stand ready for further instructions,” it said.

On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, President Mahama called for the full reinstatement of PTAs in schools nationwide, saying that sidelining parents from school governance had undermined accountability and community involvement.
