He pledged to strengthen industry partnerships to solidify the university's leadership in maritime education. At the 31st RMU Board of Governors (BoG) meeting held in Accra, Chancellor Turay, who also serves as the Chairman of the BoG, stated his dedication to supporting diversity and inclusion and investing in learning equipment and infrastructure.

Take over

Mr Turay, who is also Sierra Leone’s Minister for Transport and Aviation, assumed the role of Chancellor following a handover and induction ceremony.

He succeeds Ebrima Sillah from Gambia, who held the position for the past two years. "By fostering a culture of innovation and critical thinking, we will equip our students with the skills they need to succeed in a dynamic marine industry.

We will promote an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported, and where diverse perspectives enrich our academic and social life on campus," he stated.

Mr Turay commended his predecessor for his diligent and progressive service, adding that he aimed to ensure RMU retained its status as the premier maritime education and training institution in the sub-region.

"Let us continue to harness the spirit of unity and integration as we advance the course of this university," he urged.

Strategic role

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Frederick Obeng Adom, highlighted RMU's strategic role in the sub-region by providing quality maritime education to enable young men and women to take up active roles in the maritime sector.

"It is necessary to set a clear path and take advantage of the opportunities in the blue economy as we remain committed to RMU's growth," he added.

Mr Adom said as the host country of RMU, Ghana remained dedicated to positioning RMU as a world-class maritime training institution. He noted that advanced processes were in place for a loan facility of over $140 million from the Korean Exim Bank to modernise the RMU.

Inauguration Registry block

The event also saw the inauguration of a new Registry Block, which houses the Business Development Centre, Public Relations Unit, Quality Management Unit, conference room and canteen.

In separate addresses, the Commissioner and CEO of the Liberia Maritime Authority Counsellor, Neto Narzar Lighe Sr, and the Secretary-General of the Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa (MOWCA), Dr Paul Adalikwu, reaffirmed their commitment to RMU's growth.
