Achimota Ashfoam store in flames

Residents around Abofu, near Achimota in Accra, and passers-by were yesterday taken aback when fire razed down the one-storey building housing an Ashfoam depot at Abofu.

The fire, which started around 13:30 p.m., completely burnt all the foam mattresses and nearly extended to adjoining stores.

Fortunately, the fire did not extent to the Shell Fuel Filling Station, a development which would have been disastrous.

No life was lost in the fire.

Fire Service

A Deputy Operations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Mr Gilbert Sangmor, who briefed the Daily Graphic, said the cause of the fire had not yet been established but said investigations would be conducted to ascertain the cause.

He said the Fire Service team arrived at the scene long after the fire had started and that the fire engine only managed to put out the bellows of fire emanating from the burnt foam.

Assembly member

The Immediate Past Assembly Member for the Abofu Electoral Area, Mr James Akago, expressed concern over the fact that there was no fire station at Achimota and its environs and called on the government to consider establishing a fire station in the area.

He said he was prepared to provide a piece of land for the government for the establishment of the station to serve the community in times of disasters such as what had happened.

He recalled with regret that the fire outbreak was about the sixth to be recorded in the Achimota area.

“We cannot see this happening at Achimota all the time and we do not have to wait until lives are lost before initiating steps to have a fire station here at Achimota,” Mr Akago stated.
