Adentan MCE confirms death of 3 people from Sunday's floods

The new Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan, Ella Esiman Nongo has disclosed that three people have died in the Adentan Municipality following Sunday's floods.

“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom and a gentleman around New Legon,” she said.

Commenting on growing concerns over recurring floods in Accra, largely attributed to poor urban planning and the blocking of natural watercourses, the new MCE for Adentan pledged to implement decisive measures against illegal structures erected on waterways.

She was speaking in a radio interview with Citi FM on Monday morning.

Ms Nongo highlighted the severity of the situation, revealing that many residents remained trapped in their homes due to drainage systems blocked by unauthorised constructions on water channels.

“As we speak, some people have been trapped in their homes. Because a lot more people have built on our waterways, and that is not helping us. So, what we intend to do is to take a very drastic decision against it. It will be a decision that will hurt a few but save a lot of people,” she stated.

She further indicated that the planned interventions will include the demolition of such structures. “Demolition of properties will be part of what we will do, because dredging cannot continue. That alone might not solve the problem,” she said.
