Adu Boahene, wife apply for bail

The High Court is set to rule soon on the bail request filed by lawyers representing former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng.

The case involves the Attorney-General and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as the respondents.

The couple remains in custody as they challenge what their defense team describes as “unjustifiably harsh” bail conditions imposed by prosecutors.

Their lawyers contend that the bail demands—GH¢120 million for Adu-Boahene and GH¢80 million for his wife—are excessive and appear to be an attempt to bypass constitutional limits on detention without trial. They argue that these conditions effectively extend their clients’ detention beyond the legally allowed 48-hour period.

“The Respondents with a clear motive to incarcerate the Applicants beyond the 48-hour period as spelt out by the Constitution have imposed burdensome and unreasonable conditions on the Applicants as the precondition for their granting them bail,” it read.

In their application, the lawyers further argued that the authorities are infringing on their clients’ rights.

“The justification for the bail is solely at the discretion of the Respondents,” they stated, describing the action as a clear violation of their clients' right to liberty. The defense team also accused the state of denying their clients proper legal counsel and obstructing the due process of law.
