Adweso chief bonded to be of good behaviour

The Koforidua Circuit Court has bonded Nana Pinpong, the chief of Adweso, a suburb of Koforidua, to be of good behaviour for one year or in default serve a six-month imprisonment with hard labour after finding him guilty of causing damage to the property of his neighbour.

The court also fined him GH¢1,200, in default of which he would serve six-months imprisonment with hard labour for threatening to harm a lecturer of the All Nations University College in Koforidua.

The court, presided over by Mr Ebenezer Osei-Darko, took the decision after describing the behaviour of the traditional chief as “reprehensible”.

“The accused person is a traditional ruler and in view of that, I find his behaviour very reprehensible; he cannot take the law into his own hands and behave the way he did.

“He must always exercise decorum in his dealings with his subjects,” the court stated.

Charge

Nana Pinpong was charged with causing unlawful damage and threat of harm. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Facts of case

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Emmanuel Bronya said the complainant is a lecturer at the All Nations University College in Koforidua, while Nana Pinpong is a chief who lives at Adweso. They both shared a common boundary, being a road.

About 4:45 p.m. on May 28, 2014, the complainant sent a KIA truck loaded with cement blocks to his house for an ongoing project.

The driver parked the truck by the roadside, offloaded the blocks and parked them just by the entrance to the house of the complainant.

The accused person  caused damage to five pieces of the blocks valued at GH¢10 amidst insults and further deflated the tyres of the truck.

After the incident, the complainant invited building inspectors and personnel of the Town and Country Planning Department to the site to demarcate the road.

Again, the chief, upon seeing the personnel, became furious and approached them, threatening the complainant that he would organise the people to beat him up in the presence of the relatives of the complainant.

The Adweso chief was subsequently arrested and after investigations, he was arraigned.
