The project, estimated to cost about GH¢437,000, is expected to be completed in 12 months.

It will have a conference hall, a library, an auditorium, a parking lot and stalls.

Protest by some youth

Before the ceremony began, some people who had put up illegal structures on portions of the land earmarked for the project staged a demonstration against an order for them to vacate the land.

Wearing red armbands and chanting war songs, the demonstrators marched through the street in front of the chief’s palace to register their displeasure at their eviction.

It took the intervention of the police to maintain law and order for the event to start.

This was after the Municipal Chief Executive,  Mr Samuel Oppong, had tried unsuccessfully to calm down the protestors.

Municipal Chief Executive

In his address to the gathering, Mr Oppong said the project was being undertaken with funds from the World Bank under a District Development Facility (DDF).

He said the project was expected to provide a conducive environment where the people could gather to discuss issues affecting the progress of the town and also for social gatherings.

He noted that the Agona Nyakrom community very much needed a community centre, in view of its expansion and increase in population and said for that reason the assembly thought it wise to put up the centre as part of its development agenda for the people of the area.

He said it was the intention of the government to work assiduously to improve the living standards of the people of the area, adding that through the project a number of artisans and labourers in the area would be offered employment.

He appealed to the chiefs and elders of the town to liaise with the contractor who would be working on the project to ensure that it was completed within the stipulated period.

Member of Parliament

The Member of Parliament for the Agona West Constituency, Mr Charles Obeng-Inkoom, called on the people to be patient with the government as it tried to evenly distribute the country’s scarce resources.

He charged the contractor working on the road from Agona Nyakrom to Breman Asikuma to speed up the construction in order to ease the transportation difficulties the people were facing.

Chief of the area

The Chief of the town, Okofo Katakyi Nyarku Eku X, expressed his gratitude to the government for responding to their request for a community centre.

He said when completed the project would provide an enabling environment for them to hold gatherings and meetings.

He appealed to the contractor to employ more of the youth in the area  to relieve the burden of youth unemployment in the town and also complete the project on schedule.
