Akufo-Addo, wife eulogise late former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his wife, Rebecca, have paid tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, celebrating her legacy of leadership, advocacy, and commitment to women’s empowerment in Ghana and across Africa.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the former President described Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings as “an extraordinary woman whose dedication to gender equality and social transformation left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.”

“My wife Rebecca and I are deeply saddened by the news of the untimely passing of the wife of the late first President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings, the longest-serving First Lady in our history and the Founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement,” he stated.

Akufo-Addo highlighted her pivotal role in advancing gender equity and empowerment, describing her as a “role model for women in Ghana and beyond” whose efforts continue to shape national discourse today.

“Her commitment to the growth of the women’s movement in Ghana and Africa can never be forgotten. She was a warm and affectionate woman, with a good sense of humour and was excellent company,” he added.

The former President and his wife extended their condolences to the family of the late First Lady, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult period.

“Rebecca, my children and I extend our deepest condolences to her children and family on this sad occasion. May her soul rest peacefully in the bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall meet again,” he said.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement and Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, was widely celebrated for her pioneering advocacy for women’s rights, education for girls, and community development initiatives that transformed lives across the country.
