‘Allow school authorities to punish offending students’
The Covenant Presbyterian School has held its eighth graduation, with a call on parents to not interfere in disciplinary measures and punishments meted out by school authorities to offending students.
The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Evelyn Antwi, who made the call, said it was necessary for parents to allow school authorities and disciplinary boards in schools to decide on the best punishment for students who contravened schools’ rules and regulations.
She, therefore, charged parents to allow schools to take disciplinary measures against their children, saying that the teachers were fighting hard for the future of the students and would not mete out any punishment which would be detrimental to their well-being.
Mrs Antwi stated that some parents went as far as demanding apologies on behalf of their children from teachers who scolded them, adding, “Such children will not be afraid to break the rules and commit crimes as they know that their parents will back them.”
Challenges
Touching on some of the challenges the school faced despite the successes it had chalked up, Mrs Antwi pointed out that the school needed furniture for a new classroom block inaugurated during the graduation, to meet the demands of the growing community.
She also added that the school needed a well-furnished science laboratory to serve students during practical lessons, as well as to enhance the study of science.
Mrs Antwi also encouraged the graduands to be disciplined and remain committed to their goals in life.
The new classroom block is a two-storey building with six classrooms, washrooms and a library to accommodate more students in the school.
A total of 53 pupils and students, comprising 27 junior high school students who had written their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and 26 pre-school pupils moving from Kindergarten Two to Primary One, graduated.
