AMA creates alternative pedestrian routes at Kaneshie as footbridge repairs begin

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has established alternative pedestrian crossing points at Kaneshie following the temporary closure of footbridges for repair works, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced.

The MCE disclosed the new arrangements on Thursday during a site visit to oversee the creation of the designated routes. The closure, he said, was necessary to ensure public safety and facilitate ongoing repairs.

Addressing residents, drivers, and commuters, Mr Allotey appealed for full cooperation with the new traffic and safety measures, stressing that discipline on the roads was crucial to protecting lives.

“Development can only be achieved through collective responsibility and cooperation,” he said, calling on the public to support the Assembly’s efforts.

The Mayor urged drivers to desist from parking along the roadside, explaining that such practices contributed to congestion and obstructed pedestrian movement. He also appealed to motorists to respect traffic regulations and give pedestrians the right of way, especially at the newly designated crossing points, warning that failure to do so could result in fatal consequences.

Mr Allotey emphasised his commitment to enforcing the law, stating that authorities would not hesitate to take action against recalcitrant drivers. He cited an incident where a driver attempted to drive through despite the presence of officials managing traffic, indicating that the individual would be handed over to the police for appropriate action.

He warned that any attempt to bypass the designated routes or obstruct ongoing works would attract sanctions.

The MCE reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring public safety while improving infrastructure, assuring residents that upon completion, the repair works would deliver a safer and more reliable facility.

Speaking on the city’s development agenda, he added, required collaboration among all stakeholders, including residents, drivers, and public officials.

As of Thursday evening, the alternative pedestrian routes had been marked out, and traffic officials remained on the ground to guide commuters. No timeline was given for the completion of the footbridge repairs.
