The ceremony climaxes six years of academic qualification at the university, a minimum of two years coaching and apprenticeship under a qualified senior architect, then six weeks of intensive seminars and tutorials and the passing of a two-day Professional Practice Examination (PPE) by the council to gain state licensing.

Eighty-five candidates registered for this year’s PPE, but 83 took the examinartion, out of which 51 passed, with Mr Joy Ofori Konadu being adjudged the Overall Best Candidate.

In her welcome address, the Registrar of the ARC, Arc. Stella N.D. Arthiabah, noted that “as regulators and tutors we do not only equip architects with the tools and principles of architectural practice, but also instil in them character, integrity, competence and a sense of service to mankind.”

Mrs Arthiabah observed that public interest in good architectural design had increased in recent times, giving a positive sign and an inspiration to the ARC to continue to raise professionals who would offer cutting-edge architectural services to the country and beyond.

The President of the Ghana Institute of Architects, Mr Joseph Hayford, urged the inductees to be mindful of their new status as members of an institute whose membership upholds the highest standards in the practice of its profession.

The Minister of Water Resource Works and Housing, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, noted that the need for skilled human resources and professionalism had become critical because of the country’s rapid urbanisation and socio-economic development.

The Guest Speaker, who is a former Managing Director of First Atlantic Bank, Mr Jude Arthur, expressed concern about the haphazard planning of cities and the needless loss of lives as a result of buildings collapsing.

He expressed the view that such disasters may have occurred because the builders failed to use an architect.
