Karaga curfew lifted after two weeks of unrest

The government has lifted the curfew imposed on Karaga Township and its environs in the Northern Region after two weeks of restrictions following chieftaincy disturbances.

The Minister for the Interior, Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, announced the decision on Thursday, April 30, 2026, on the advice of the National Security Council and through an Executive Instrument.

He said the decision was taken after an improvement in the security situation.

The curfew was imposed on April 15, 2026, to contain unrest linked to chieftaincy disagreements.

It initially ran from 6.00 pm to 6.00 am daily. On April 20, 2026, the hours were reviewed to 8.00 pm to 4.00 am.

A ban on the possession of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons remains in force in Karaga Township and its surrounding communities.

The Ministry warned that persons found with such items will be arrested and prosecuted.

The government has urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, the youth and residents to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through peaceful means.
