Two people died while eight others sustained injuries following a road traffic accident at Dompoase near Komenda on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway on Friday evening.
One of the deceased persons was trapped in the Toyota Hiace vehicle with registration number AS 6145-24 after the crash.
Personnel at the Komenda Fire Station responded to the distress call at about 6:55 p.m. and arrived at the accident scene at 7:10 p.m.
According to the rescue team, one person was found dead at the scene, while another victim, who was trapped in the mangled vehicle, was extricated but later pronounced dead, bringing the death toll to two.
The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Divisional Officer Grade II (DO II) Abdul Wasiu Hudu, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said preliminary investigations indicated that 10 people were travelling in the Toyota Hiace at the time of the accident.
He said eight occupants sustained injuries, including three who were critically injured.
According to him, personnel from the National Ambulance Service conveyed the injured to the Elmina Polyclinic for treatment.
The statement said preliminary information gathered from an eyewitness suggested that an unidentified vehicle travelling from Takoradi towards Cape Coast attempted to overtake another vehicle.
In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision with the overtaking vehicle, the Toyota Hiace, which was travelling from Cape Coast towards Takoradi, reportedly veered off its lane and crashed into a broken-down truck with registration number GN 2491-14.
The impact of the collision left one occupant trapped inside the commercial vehicle until fire officers arrived to carry out the rescue operation, while another occupant died instantly at the scene.
