Ghana’s 4x100m men’s relay team booked their spot in the final of the 2026 Commonwealth Games after running a blistering 38.40 seconds to finish second in heat two on Saturday morning.
The quartet of Benjamin Azamati, Team Captain Joseph Paul Amoah, Mustapha Bokpin and national record holder Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, running in that order, finished just behind South Africa who clocked 38.30s to win the section.
Behind Ghana and also through to the final later this evening were England and Jamaica who posted 38.90s and 39.13s in third and fourth place respectively.
They will compete the deciding race tonight against Nigeria (38.46), Canada (38.53), Australia (38.69) and Kenya (39.66) who topped heat one in that order.
The Ghanaians hope to exorcise the ghosts of previous disappointments in the relays when they line up at the Scotstoun Stadium, aiming to give Ghana only it’s third medal of the quadrennial multi-sport event.
Para thrower Zinabu Issah and boxer Amadu Mohammed are the only ones to make the podium for the country so far in the women’s F57 and men’s 55 kg (bantamweight) boxing competitons, respectively. 46 year old Issah sealed silver last Tuesday whilst Mohammed, 21, settled for bronze yesterday, both on their Commonwealth Games debuts.
Ghana’s women meanwhile suffered a baton exchange heartbreak at the very first hurdle to finish 6th in the 4x100m relay, and missed out on qualification after clocking 50.75s.
100m hurdler Evonne Britton, who was the lead-off runner in the race, mixed up the exchange with Deborah Acheampong who went on to hand over to Lovina Ewusi on the third leg, with Anita Afrifa anchoring as Ghana’s hopes ended in disappointment.
