Asakyi chief swears oath to Asantehene

The Provost of the College of Architecture and Planning of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Edward Badu, has been  sworn in as  the Chief of Asakyi, near Bekwai in the Ashanti Region, under the  stool name Nana Mensah Bonsu, at a colourful ceremony at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Nana Mensah Bonsu swore the oath of allegiance to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at a durbar at the palace.

Speaking before the swearing-in ceremony, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, advised the new chief to be humble, respectful and approachable to his elders and people to facilitate development in his area.

He said educating the youth of the region and the nation in general was one of his major concern and, therefore, urged Nana Mensah Bonsu to use his rich experience in education to transform and promote the development of education in his community.

He said a number of chiefs in the region were seriously engaged in the illegal gold mining (galamsey) activities, which has caused the pollution of our water bodies and land degradation in the region and therefore, urged them to desist from such shameful acts, which undermine the chieftaincy institution.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu stated that chiefs  were partners in development and, therefore, advised Nana Bonsu to initiate development projects in collaboration with his elders to reflect the quality living condition of his people in his community.

Swearing the oath of allegiance before Otumfuo Osei Tutu, Nana Bonsu promised to be loyal, obedient and committed towards Otumfuo’s vision to promote education and social development in the region.
