The amount is intended to support the humanitarian work of the late Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills.

The Atta Mills Care is an NGO under the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Foundation, a non-sectarian, non-partisan and non-profit institution dedicated to the memory of the late President.

It is funded through private contributions and seeks to promote excellence and harness the leadership qualities in talented but disadvantaged youth and those with physical and other disabilities in Ghana.

In particular, the foundation provides financial assistance to talented children from poor homes to further their education and supports sports programmes for the youth with physical and other impairments, including their participation in the Special Olympics.

Living the dream

Receiving the cheque, the President of the Foundation, Mr Kofi Sam Mills, the son of the late President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, said the NGO started about 10 years ago as the late President’s birthday project.

He said as time passed, it became a norm to donate to one institution or the other on his (Atta Mills) birthday so as to afford people who would want to give him gifts the opportunity to be part of a cause that would benefit the society.

Therefore, he said, following the death of the statesman, the family took it upon themselves to continue with the humanitarian work by supporting the vulnerable in society.

Since then, he said every year on the late President’s birthday, they donate food items as well as other consumables and products to vulnerable institutions in the country, with support from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

He lauded the Licensed Stevedore Operators Association of Ghana for their support and urged other benevolent individuals and institutions to assist the NGO.

Happy to support

Presenting the cheque, the President of the association, Mr Stephen Adjei-Acheampong, said the association was happy to support any humanitarian efforts to support the needy and the vulnerable in society.

“For us, I think that on humanitarian grounds, it is just appropriate that we support such initiatives and the good work that you are doing to support the needy and the less privileged in society,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the organisation would live up to expectation and also keep the dreams of President John Evans Atta Mills alive.

Donation to the 37 Military Hospital

In another development, the Atta Mills Care has presented assorted items to the 37 Military Hospital for onward distribution to the fire and flood victims of the June 3 Disaster in Accra.

The gesture was in response to the request for relief items for the victims of the disaster.

The items presented were 50 bags of rice, 50 cartons of bottled water and 20 packets of toilet rolls. The rest were 50 packets of milo,10 packets of milk and 10 packets of brown sugar.

Presenting the items, Mr Kofi Sam-Mills commended the hospital for its continued sacrifice and care for the injured.

He said the foundation would continue to reach out to people who had been affected by natural disasters to have some form of relief.
Mr Kofi Atta-Mills further appealed to individuals and organisations to show their love for the disaster victims as they continue to receive treatment at the various hospitals.

More support

Flying Officer Stella Lawerteh who received the items on behalf of the hospital said the items would be distributed to the affected persons and their families and called for more support.

The foundation later presented some of the items to the Police Hospital for onward distribution to other victims on admission at the hospital.
