Be guided by Chieftaincy Act in enstoolment of chiefs — Nii Kojo Ababio

Oblempong Nii Kojo Ababio V, the President of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council in the Ga State, has admonished his people to be guided by the Chieftaincy Act and enstool chiefs from the right lineage.

He attributed the plethora of chieftaincy disputes that had engulfed the Ga State of late to the disregard for the law by different factions in the enstoolment of chiefs.

“Fighting for positions will not help anybody. When we are guided by the Constitution and the Chieftaincy Act in the choice of a chief, we fulfil all the conditions,” he said.

Oblempong Nii Ababio gave the advice in an exclusive interview he granted the Daily Graphic during last Saturday’s celebration of the annual Homowo festival of the chiefs and people of Ngleshi Alata at Jamestown.

‘Stick to rules’

The 95-year-old chief, who has been on the Ngleshie Alata stool for the past 37 years, said although chieftaincy disputes were a global problem, they could be minimised if the stakeholders strictly stuck to the rules.

He said the chieftaincy institution was a noble one and asked his counterparts to work hard to achieve amicable settlement of disputes within the society and ensure peaceful co-existence.

Oblempong Ababio said the elevation of stools to paramountcies called for a change in conception, perception, administration and management.

He said areas such as health, education, sanitation and skills development for the youth were high on the agenda of the traditional council and appealed to his people to help achieve those goals.

He urged the people to put the past behind them and forge ahead to ensure the rapid development of the area.

Oblempong Ababio deplored the increasing spate of land guard activities in the Ga State, which, he said, was giving it a bad name.
He asked those engaged in the nefarious activities and their sponsors to put a stop to them.
